About the Team
The Sage Creek Field Hockey team has been around for years and has slowly been gaining in popularity. As a Fall Sport, there are lots of options for girls to choose from if they want to play a sport, and while field hockey is likely the least known, we're doing our best to promote it. Since 2022, we have had enough girls to have both a Varsity and Junior Varsity team, both enabling us to take all students who want to play onto the team as well as improve our varsity program by having more experienced players.
The program is built around a somewhat simple philosophy (more detail about my coaching philosophy here). We aim to create a team where we are having fun, constantly learning and improving, and growing as a team. One of my favorite things over the years are seeing the lasting friendships that get created before school has even started. Particularly for incoming Freshman, having 2-3 weeks to make friends before high school starts is an added bonus to joining the team (and many of the girls who met on the field remain friends throughout high school).
We find that girls who come from sports such as Soccer or Lacrosse tend to pick up the sport quickly, but is by no means required. It's a good field sport to keep people in shape when preparing for soccer (winter) or lacrosse (spring). As the field positioning is similar, these athletes tend to have a quick learning curve. That said, most of the athletes joining the team have never picked up a field hockey stick before tryouts and that is not just OK, but totally normal for our team. By the end of the season, the girls will be competing and having fun (and parents might just understand the rules by then :) ).
It is important to remember, as a high school sport, the Varsity team is coached to do all of the above, but also to try to win. A varsity high school sport has uneven playing time and the best players tend to get the most field time, however, I do aim to get as much playing time for the members of the team as possible, depending on the situation. JV, on the other hand, has a heavy focus on development, and that means game time. While the minutes may not be perfectly distributed, everyone on JV plays every game.
In the end, I believe we've built a program that feels safe, is fun to play, and continues to establish itself as one of the better programs in D2.
